Welcome to ‘Gun Hill’ at School of Artillery. This audio guided tour will assist you in your visit to Gun Hill and make you aware of the significant role played by the Regiment of Artillery in 1999 Kargil war ‘OPERATION VIJAY’.
‘OPERATION VIJAY’ was fought on the icy mountainous peaks of the Kargil & Drass Sector, where Indian Army displayed exemplary grit & determination successfully defeating the enemy and regaining the lost territory. The brave Gunners of Regiment of Artillery fought the fiercest of the battles in the highest traditions of Indian Army thus bringing glory to the entire nation. This monument is a testimony of the contribution of gunners in the service of the nation.
You are right now standing at the base of ‘Gun Hill’ and to your rear is the Cannon Officers Mess, the abode of the ‘Young Officers’ of the Regiment of Artillery. To your right, placed in a black marble is an information board about ‘Reminiscence of Point 5140: Gun Hill’. This highlights the significance of Artillery in ‘OPERATION VIJAY’ and brings out how the Gunners delivered accurate and continuous firepower on the enemy positions to demoralise him and ultimately evict him out of our motherland. It also brings out the role of Gunners in Battle of Point 5140, which has now been rechristened as ‘Gun Hill’.
As you climb up to the Gun Hill, you will start seeing the monument onto your left and the scenic view of School of Artillery on your right. ‘Gun Hill’ also serene arboriculture, which is a treat to the eyes. Spare a moment and appreciate the sheer grandeur of the monument, the beauty of the location and the scenic view around as you climb to the top. Once you reach on the top, please position yourself at the centre of the pathway facing the Gun Hill, where you will be guided through the second part of the Audio guide.
